Qualification Description

This qualification reflects the role of an individual working as a senior civil works designer or a paraprofessional designer, who supports professional engineers. They perform tasks that are broad, specialized, complex and technical and include strategic areas and initiating activities. They are responsible for the design of complex projects to ensure the implementation of the client’s site requirements and are required to demonstrate self-directed application of theoretical and technical knowledge and initiate solutions to technical problems or management requirements.

Entry Requirements

AGE REQUIREMENTS  

Students must be above 18 years of age while filling up the application form.

PRE-TRAINING REVIEW  

The Pre-Training Review (PTR) will be conducted prior to enrollment in your course of studies to ensure that the training and assessment provided by GHMC can meet the student’s individual needs. Students will be required to fill out the PTR form and submit it with the application form.  

GHMC will review the student’s current competencies, needs, English level, support requirements, and oral communication skills in order to enroll them in the most appropriate course to achieve their intended outcomes.

ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS

ENGLISH LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS  

International students applying for this course, either off-shore or on-shore, will require either a minimum IELTS test score of 5.5 or equivalent for direct entry into a VET course:  

– IELTS score of 5.0 or equivalent with an ELICOS course (up to 10 weeks) to be taken before the course;  

– IELTS score of 4.5 or equivalent with an ELICOS course (up to 20 weeks) to be taken before the course;  

(Note: Results older than two years are not acceptable)  

– Oxford Placement test with score 61 or higher.  

Score Guide: Average test score of 61 or higher in the Oxford placement test is equivalent to IELTS 5.5.  

Students may refer to IELTS 5.5 equivalent policy or GHMC’s Enrolment Kit for further information.

LANGUAGE, LITERACY AND NUMERACY TEST (LLN)  

Students undertaking this course at GHMC Institute must possess sound numeracy skills, as it requires them to do calculations or other course-related work. All students wishing to study at GHMC Institute are required to undertake the LLN Test prior to enrollment.  

Students will be required to undertake a language, literacy, and numeracy (LLN) test and achieve the expected performance level of ACSF level 4 for RII60520 – Advanced Diploma of Civil Construction Design.  Refer to GHMC’s Enrolment Kit or Student Handbook for detailed information.

Assessment:

A variety of assessment methods form part of this course including written assignments, presentations, portfolios of work, role plays and projects.

Intake Dates:

Monthly intakes except June and December

Study Period

In a year, there are two study periods:

  • The 1st study period: from January to May (June Break)
  • The 2nd study period: from July to November (December Break)

Note: Students may be required to continue their study during the June break and December break. The study classes in June and December can be arranged due to special circumstances (e.g., lack of academic progress or under the intervention strategy plan.)

COMPUTER LITERACY REQUIREMENTS  

All students enrolling in this course at GHMC must have basic computer skills. Students are required to fill out the questions related to computer and internet skills in the Pre-Training Review form provided along with the application form. Students who do not possess basic computing skills will be provided with basic computer-using support.


RPL/CREDIT TRANSFER  

Students with prior learning and work experience can apply for RPL. Students who have completed corresponding units of competency and/or units contained within the packaging rules can apply for Credit Transfer. RPL evidence must include some of the following:

– Work experience

– Life experience

– Previous study

– Professional development programs

MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT REQUIRED  

GHMC will provide access to computers with required resources, including access to the internet, Computer-Aided Design (CAD) programs selected from including AUTOCAD, Civil 3D, Revit, and Microsoft Project during classroom hours; however, to work on the assignments and tasks for self-study, all learners are expected to have access to a laptop or computer with the Windows 7 operating system or higher. Students must have an active email address for communication and be contactable by phone (mobile or landline) and by mail (postal address). All learners are expected to have access to MS Office applications such as Microsoft Word, an email platform.
